Blanche & Lucy enjoy the Wildlife in Banff

Being city girls we enjoyed viewing the wildlife as we camped the most.  Blanche and Lucy mostly only see dogs and cats where we live and the most exciting wildlife they experience is an occasional squirrel -which send them into a tizzy.  So seeing large wildlife has been a real treat for them.  We only view them from the windows of the car - but that's close enough for them - they are hypnotized by them and quietly stare  transfixed as the wildlife graze or wander around nearby.
This is a Mule Deer of which we saw many.

Prairie Dogs (or Columbian Ground Squirrels) were the ones they wanted to chase most.

Most animals are more active in the early morning hours and at dusk.  But we saw this Caribou Elk in the middle of the day as we drove to Lake Louise.

At one point this Elk was within a couple of feet of our vehicle.
The winding drive up to Mt Norquay Rd towards the ski area yielded our biggest wildlife viewing.
We encountered a small group of Big Horn Sheep.  As you can see they are molting their winter coats.....looking pretty ragged.
Both the male and the female have horns though the male ram's horns are curled and much larger.
The sheep are attracted to the mineral licks along the roadside cliffs.
They had no problem just trotting along the road right in front of our vehicles ans stopping traffic.
I found it facinating that Mother Nature gives the sheep a coat that blends so well with the rocks and cliffs to protect them from preditors.
